Players were welcomed to Days Inn, 6102 Landmark Center Boulevard, Greensboro, NC by a nice office desktop display announcing "Welcome ! 2013 11-Man National Open Checker Tournament"

Congratulations! To World Champion GM Alex Moiseyev of Dublin, Ohio who won the 2013 11-Man National Tournament. GM Alex Moiseyev won the title in 2008 and he has defended it four times since then.

Congratulations! To IM Tim Laverty of Graham, North Carolina who was our 2013 2nd Place 11-Man Ballot National Champion, and earned the privilege to challenge the Champ to a WTM.

Congratulations! To Bobby Gerringer of Pittsboro, North Carolina who won our Majors Division "Class B" and the new 2013 11-Man Ballot Majors National Champion. When you win a divisional title you must move up to the next level for the next 3 years.

JR Smith, tournament director, welcomed 14 Masters and 9 Majors players to the 2013 11-Man National Checker Tournament. He thanked the out of town players and several 1^st timers to play in North Carolina. He asked Teal Stanley to open our National Tournament with invocation and follow with discussion on schedule and rules, which we agreed to keep the schedule as published in the tournament announcement. 11-Man decks with instruction card were distributed to players who needed them. We had 23 players from 12 states: 11 from NC, 2 from OH, & GA, and one each from AL, CO, IN, KY, PA, SC, TN and WV. James Martin doesn’t play on Saturday but he proxy registered to played Sunday and Monday.

We decided to play two classes; a Masters Class of 9 rounds as outlined in the tournament announcement, and a Majors Class of 9 rounds at 3 hours per round for each group, and 3 rounds per day Saturday through Monday. We used Swiss pairing and only repairing when necessary in the final rounds.

We ask players to record their games on provided recorder sheets. We started playing at 9:30am Saturday and would start Saturday and Sunday at 9:00am. Tim Laverty served as our Referee and Scorekeeper.

Raleigh Johnson asks to play down and to make an even number field in the Majors division, tournament director ask Mike Ross or Matthew Clark to play up. Mike Ross won the Majors last year so he rightfully played up.

Monday at lunch time several players were questioning if we should play our 9^th round since the top place winners were obvious at the end of our 7^th round. We announced we would play through on a floating lunch break, since we had players who needed travel time back home, and our next 8^th round would definitely determine the top places. We voted to decide if we would terminate the tournament on the 8^th round or continue our 9^th round tournament. The full 9 rounds tournament won by a 13-6 vote out of 19 players.

Matthew Clark led the Majors “B Class” from start to his withdrawing in the 8^th round because of a prior commitment. We agreed to mail him his winnings according to where he placed. Normally we follow NC State Tournament Rules and deposit the withdrawn player’s cash in next year’s tournament fund; however, Matt announced upon entering the tournament he would only play possibly 1 or 2 rounds Sunday.
We recognized Alex Holmes as the youngest player who will be 14 on February 28, Raleigh Johnson as the oldest at 89 on July 12^th, and Eric Strange as traveling the longest distance as 1,600 miles from Colorado Springs, CO.

Mr. Bill Stanley would have been recognized as the oldest play had he been present on Monday as being 92 years young on July 22^nd this year.

Mike Ross brought his honey for sale and a bag of pecans, and a 2 pint baggy of roasted soybeans for the player to enjoy.

“Chef” Bobby Gerringer brought his delicious cream cheese cakes that vanished so quickly he brought 2 more Monday so the players could continue to enjoy his cream cheese cakes.

Mrs. Carolyn Minor made a delicious checkerboard pattern layered cake (velvet & white squares) with white icing for the players to enjoy Saturday.

Gayle Smith invited the wives over to the house for a little social time; she also took pictures, which we appreciate. Wives attending were: Carol Williamson, Gayle Smith, Linda Choate, Helen Vinson (Raleigh's GF), Carolyn Minor, and Tiffany Stanley.

Jeff Webster also visited the tournament Monday to socialize with the players and observe some tournament play. Trey Stanley also dropped in to check on us when he and Tiffany Stanley came by.

We also appreciate Alan Millhone clicking smart-phone pictures of checker playing in the lobby of Days Inn Friday evening and throughout the tournament.

Monday at lunch break we showed our respect and appreciation by celebrated Word Champion GM Alex Moiseyev’s 54th birthday a day early with the players enjoying and sharing a piece of his birthday cake! We also recognized Alex Holmes' birthday which is coming up on the 28th of February making him 14 years old.

Tim Laverty decided to exercise his privilege at the conclusion of the tournament to challenge for a WTM, by filing his bid to challenge for the 11-Man WTM against GM Moiseyev with the ACF 11-Man Ballot committee.

Prize funds are only paid out to those players completing the tournament, and those amounts not paid are applied to next years fund if the payout schedule is already figured. Withdrawn players are also not placed as a finished position.

GM stands for Grand Master, IM for International Master, and CM for Candidate Master, which are earned titles given to distinguish players by WCDF.

ACF Ratings - updated immediately, ratings supplied by ICH Checkers www.icheckers.net Program written by Vadim Khavinson, and calculated by Joe Moore and Eric Strange immediately upon receiving crosstables.

"/" separates player's game points for that round from his accumulated game points. Win is 2 points, Draw is 1, Bye is 3, and a Forfeit is 4.

A group of players enjoyed breakfast at Spring Valley Restaurant before the tournament Saturday and Monday morning, which is just up the road from the Libby Hill Restaurant.

We had a light snow and freezing rain or sleet Saturday morning, but slacked up and stopped by afternoon, but it was cold and icy, but our roads were clear, and it remain cold the next two days.

We appreciate Tim Laverty as our official referee and scorekeeper, and also appreciate Libby Hill Restaurant, our venue for keeping coffee and drinks available throughout our tournament, most players mentioned they enjoyed a variety of good seafood served by Libby Hill.

Tim submitted all recorded games to Alan Millhone who will turn them over to Jim Loy so he can review, correct, verify, and annotate them for publication.

We appreciate the donations and contributions which totaled $750.00. This and the $690 entry fees collected made $1,440.00 less expenses = 1,330.00 total cash prize.

Grover Minor's son “Ty” came by to visit us, socialize, eat lunch, and enjoyed the tournament.

All players renewed their ACF memberships who were not current and verified their membership information.

Bobby Gerringer was written up in The Chatham Record on February 28, a Pittsboro newspaper.

All players will received a 2013 memorial coffee mug and a nice deck of laminated 11-Man Ballot Cards. Incidentally, the mugs didn't arrive on time and I will be delivering them to you when I see you at another tournament. It cost too much to mail them. However, we did draw names and give away 7 door prizes.

A delightful tournament & wonderful fellowship was had by all who attended!
