Three games in 4th Rd went into overtime 1 minute per move, to mandate draws. Rayevsky was late Saturday morning, forfeiting 1st Gm.Rd 5.
Mike Garvey and Clint Pickard were late entry player... started their 5th Round on Saturday Morning.
James Martin would have played except he experienced a heart attack Wednesday morning. All the players signed a get well card, and his wife Jan said he was recovering and possibly be back home Tuesday.
Ray Shelly announced that Wallace H. "Wally" Mann, Jr. of Fredericksburg, VA passed away in July 19, 2007 at age 87 and his wife, Thelma wanted the checker players to know how much he enjoyed playing checkers.
This snap shot was given to me by Bob Parks of Maryland and now of Old Fort, NC which was taken at a Pennsylvania State Tournament.
Mr. Rodger L. Hubbard 86, of Cambridge, Maryland died Friday, October 31, 2008. This story was related by Ray Shelly, who told me Tommy Wiswell would hold a checker exhibition in Cambridge, sponsored by the Rescue Fire Company. They would raise money for their Fire Department by charging entrance fees in order to play Wiswell. These checker exhibition drew crowds of 150 and seemed to be a popular attraction in Cambridge. Of all the games and players who participated, Roger is the only one who beat Tommy Wiswell in a game at Cambridge. He passed away on Friday the 1st day of District IV Tournament. Click here for his obituary .
Five States and 19 Entrants (JR Smith withdrew after 1st Rd because his 92 year old mother was hospitalized Friday morning after falling at her home in Porter)
