The 77th Illinois 101 Counties Tournament was held in Marion, IL on October 1st and 2nd, 2011. Total attendance was eleven players. After discussions, we formed an A Class of 7 players and a B Class of 4 players. The A Class played a round-robin tournament. The B Class played two round-robin cycles then a king-of-the-hill pair for the last round.  Total cash prize of $440.00.

Gary Ellison won the A class and is both the Illinois 101 Champion and the Tournament Champion. In the B Class Howard Hoover took the Illinois 101 B Class honor, while Harvey Powell was the top player in the B Class. Congratulation to these winners.

Illinois Checker Association elected new officers: President, Ramon Dionisio; V Pres, Howard Hoover; and re-elected Sec & Treas, Roger Doll.

The Illinois 101 is a seven round 3-move tournament. A total prize fund of $440 was distributed. The Illinois 101 Counties Tournament was founded in the 1920s for downstate checker players at a time when players from Chicago, Illinois dominated the Illinois checker scene with several active checker clubs and also home of such checker greats as Alfred Jordan, Joe Duffy, S.S. Bell, G. M. Tanner and Frank R. Wendemuth. The state of Illinois has 102 counties. Excluding Chicago’s Cook County gives us the name, Illinois 101 Counties Tournament. The first 101 Counties Tourney was in February 19 thru 20, 1926 the "Illinois Down State Tournament" was held at Champaign with H.H. Lewis winning the title. In 1977 the tournament became an open tournament for all players.
