2013 15th Annual Pool Checkers Festival

LAMBERT & LAY TIE IN SOUTH BEND!

 

Top Masters Al Lambert, Richton Park, Ill., and Clorius Lay, Gary, Ind., tied for first place in the 15th Annual South Bend Pool Checker Festival on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013.  Each scored 17 points out of a possible 28.  Nobody ran away with the contest, as 96-year-old George Robinson, Toledo, Ohio, took third place only a point behind at 16, and several-time winner Charles “Pecan” Thompson made 15.

 

Oliver Griffin, who came all the way from Washington, D.C., skunked the opposition in the “B” Division with 23 points—11 wins and only 1 draw.  Arthur Bell, South Bend, was second with 16, and Tal Roberts, Washington, placed third with 14.

 

The tournament was dedicated to the memory of Therman “Chicken George” Earnest and Stoney Burke, both of Chicago, who were faithful regulars at this event and passed away earlier this year.  The attendance of 15 was a considerable decrease from 2012, so the prizes had to be a bit smaller, but the hard-fought contest was a challenge for all.  Thanks to Clorius Lay and Willie Coleman, also of Gary, who made generous donations to support the event.  Roger Blaine was Tournament Director.  Scoring was based on 2 points per win and 1 per draw.  Updated numerical ratings based on the results will be posted later.

FLETCHER FLIES IN BIG-BOARD TOURNEY

 

Thomas Fletcher, Washington, D.C., rolled over everyone in the 100-square International Checkers tournament on Sunday, Nov. 10, 2013.  Fletcher won 7 straight for a perfect score of 14, and Oliver Griffin, also of Washington, was second with 8 points.

 

Attendance in the Big-Board contest went up from the last few years as 8 competed and competition at least for second place was very close up to the end.
