The 2013 Alabama State & District 5 Open Checker Tournament was held in Haleyville, AL Friday and Saturday, November 8th & 9th -  at Imperial Inn / Galley Restaurant.
District 5 contains States: Alabama, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee - District Manager: Larry Pollard

Larry Pollard of Brilliant, AL as the 2013 Alabama State and  District 5 Champion.  Larry continues to dominate the Alabama State Checker Championship Title which this win makes his fifteenth time.  |  Congratulations!  Teal Stanley of Greensboro, NC who tied Pollard in game points as 2nd Place Finishers in the Master Division; however, Pollard beat Stanley in their head to head match.  |  Congratulations! Byron Woolum, from Walker KY for winning the 2013 Alabama State & District 5 Open Majors Division.  |  Congratulations! John Gibson, Elbert Jones, and Harold Thornton who were in a 3-way tie for 2nd Place Finish in the Majors Division. Congratulations! Foy Percell, Florence, AL is recognized as 2013 Alabama State Majors Champion and Harold Thornton or Booneville, MS as the 2013 District 5 Majors Champion.
• Frank & Mary Davis usually attends and Mary keeps score & helps direct, but not this tournament because Frank has been in the hospital fighting a bad case of pneumonia and before that, he just had his heart defibrillator put in.  We want to keep Frank and Mary in our prayers.
  
• Larry Pollard - Tournament Director / Kelly Pollard as Scorekeeper had 15 players to register & play, representing 8 States:  4 from AL, 3 from NC, 2 from MS, TN, and one each from GA, KY, LA, & TX.  They were divided into two Divisions: as 8 Masters and 7 Majors.
• Larry Pollard - District V Manager welcomed all players and visitors at the opening of the tournament business meeting. This annual “Alabama State & Fifth District Open Event” makes the 8th continuous year at the Galley Restaurant in Haleyville, which has a suitable meeting room. Galley is the town's social and business hub for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  Haleyville Civitans meet there every Tuesday, others like the Lions, Business & Professional Women's Club, Riding for Christian Motorcyclists Association, Haleyville Bass Anglers, etc. also meet there.
• The Total Cash Prize: $1,745.00 = Entry Fees $300 ($20x15) + contributions & donations.
• We voted to play seven rounds of Round-Robin for both divisions.  2 game per round of 1^1/4 hours per game, 4 rounds Friday and 3 rounds Saturday. Starting at 8:00 AM Saturday.

• "Absolute Alabama" - Fred Hunter profiles people and places who make the state of Alabama unique and special, are doing an event on checkers.  It's a weekly TV show and they are going to do something with Larry Pollard and Alabama Checkers!  I think they are suppose to air this event about the middle of February, 2014 and run it 30+ times over the weekly show according to its popularity.
• Big "Thank You" to Larry, his daughter Kelly for the delicious buffet deli trays, and all others who had a part in making this an excellent tournament.
