BELL TOPS TWO TOURNEYS IN SOUTH BEND - reported by Roger Blaine Tue, Nov 14, 2017 at 12:57 PM

Arthur "Sonny" Bell of South Bend, Indiana, took first place in the 19th Annual Pool Checkers tournament in his home town on Nov. 11, 2017, and also topped the International or Big-Board contest the next day.

Bell, ranked as a Junior Master in Pool Checkers, scored 22 out of a possible 28 to edge Top Masters Fred D. Shurn, 21, and  last year's winner, Charlie Williams, Louisville, Ky., 17.   Bell started out with a win and a draw against Shurn, and split with one win each against Williams at the end.  Along the way, he won 9, drew 4, and lost only one.

The attendance of 8 was a decrease from last year, and we played all in one section.  Roberto Ernest, Chicago, won the "Amateur" prize for best Under 1700 rating with a fine 13.  The ratings are based on previous South Bend results, and scores were figured as 2 points for a win and 1 for a draw.
