New checkers champion takes crown

From Staff Reports

For the first time in five years, North Carolina has a new checkers champion.

Tim Laverty of Graham was the top state finisher in the 120th N.C. State Open Checker Tournament, which concluded Saturday in Siler City.

John R. Webster of Stoneville, state champ the last four years, had a scheduling conflict and did not participate.  Laverty has won the title nine times, most recently in 2003.

The N.C. Checker Association has crowned a checkers champion every year since 1918, except for three years during World War II.
