World Champion Moiseyev victorious in NC State tourney

By Don Beane

SILER CITY Checker heavyweights from all over the nation flooded to the Days Inn in Siler City on Friday and Saturday to take part in the 2010 North      Carolina Open Checker Tournament.

The two-day event was deemed a big success by Tournament Director J.R. Smith from Greensboro.

“It’s been a wonderful event and Siler City has been great,” said Smith on Saturday at the tournament which featured players from the likes of Ohio, Tennessee, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and California among other states. “We’ve enjoyed the stay here and there has been some great games between some of the top players in the world.”

Alex Moiseyev, a 1991 Russian immigrant from Moscow who now resides in Dublin, Ohio, headlined the cast of Checkers players.

“Alex is considered the top player in the world and is currently the World Champion, a title he has held since 1992,” continued Smith. “He is amazing to watch.”

Moiseyev, 51, has even written a Checker Guide, called “Sixth”, which is considered the sports main publication when it comes to strategy and features more than 500 diagrams, 114 games, and 66 direct and 114 indirect openings.

The A Class was taken by Moiseyev who downed Larry Keen of Tennessee for title. Rounding out the Top 5 in the highest class were Tim Laverty from North Carolina in 3rd, Ryan Pronk of Virginia in 4th, and Vic Habgood of Virginia in 5th.

Taking a victory in the B Class was Joe McClellan while Bill McClintock was 2nd. Rounding out the Top 5, all from NC, were Mike Ross in 3rd, Bobby Gerringer in 4th and Cecil Lowe in 5th.

Tim Laverty, of Graham, was crowned the new 2010 State Checker Tournament, this making his 9th state championship.  Joe McClellan, meanwhile, hailing from Winston Salem, was captured the 2010 State Majors Checker champion.
