After a two-day competition, Alex Moiseyvev won the 97th annual Virginia State Checker Tournament on Saturday in Bedford. Moiseyvev had an almost perfect game except for one draw to the reigning Virginia champion Ryan Pronk. Pronk is a designer for The News & Advance.

He placed second but was the highest-placing Virginia resident. John Webster, of North Carolina, placed third.
