November 30,1977 - Sanford News-Herald - Sanford checkers expert cops title

This article is about the results of 1977 US GAYP National Tournament just finished in Sanford, NC with Elbert Lowder winning 1st place $500 and Lester Balderson taking 2nd place $300.00 (time decision).  November 21-25th, 44 players and $3,000 cash with ACF President Homer Caulkins of Los Angeles and Treasurer, Howard Owen attending the tournament with Owen as official referee.  This win for Lowder gains him the right to play Derek Oldbury of Devon, England next year for a WCM.  Derek is expected to defend his title he won here in Sanford at the US 3-Move Nationals last year.   Lowder and Balderson continue to battle it out at the Southeastern - District IV Tournament the following week with Lowder again taking 1st and Balderson 2nd place here in Sanford.
